Switzerland: « Child Labour Programme » Trainee

In the context of the 2017-2020 strategic plan, Terre des Hommes decided to intensify its efforts to fight exploitation of children by work. The recently launched Child Labour Program is the main actor in achieving this goal, and puts a special focus on the value chain of large companies.

To join the forming team, we are looking for a:

« Child Labour Programme » Trainee

Terre des hommes is the leading Swiss child relief agency, committed to improve the lives of the world's most vulnerable children. With an activity volume of CHF 80 million, we operate in more than 30 countries, with over a 100 development and emergency projects impacting more than 2 million beneficiaries. Our overall staff is over 1,600 people, 130 of them based in our headquarters in Lausanne.

Every year, Terre des hommes provides assistance to approximately 90,000 child victims of labour exploitation. Most of these children can be found working in the fields, mines and quarries or as domestic servants and street beggars. However, many are also the victims of exploitation in the value chain of big multinational companies.

Objective
In your internship, you will report to the Head of Child Labour Programme. In close collaboration, you will support the development and implementation programme’s initiatives.

Main tasks

  • Act as the focal point for global advocacy campaigns « TimetoTalk » and « Child Labour Report 2017»
  • Keep collaborators on the field informed on the topic of child labour, and provide technical support as needed
  • Carry out research and analysis connected to child labour, develop and maintain a database of information for the programme, and keep it up-to-date (projects, reports, studies, meetings notes )
  • Draft and edit documents: contribute to strategic and operational work in written form
  • Prepare presentations, organize events and meetings, and carry out administrative tasks
  • Enlarge the programme’s network, take part in relevant meetings, prepare reports, update and discuss outcomes with Head of Programme
  • Contribute to fundraising: monitor market for financing opportunities in the child labour field
  • Provide further administrative and organizational support as required.

Your profile

  • Master’s degree in international relations, human rights, preferably with a focus on children’s rights
  • Understanding of the SDG and advocacy, the Decent Work Agenda, knowledge of ILO Conventions, or the Conventions on the Right of the Child would be an asset
  • Analytical mindset and good reporting skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Good grounds for office IT (Excel, Word, Power Point) and internet navigation & search skills
    Knowledge of any design tools (Adobe Creative Cloud or similar) would be an asset
  • Fluency in English is an absolute must, and operational working knowledge of French is required.

Work conditions

Activity rate : 100%
Length of internship : ideally 8 months (at least 6 months)
Salary: 1'500 CHF per month
Starting date : 1st April 2017
